- to understand the role of ultraviolet light in carcinogenesis
- to understand the different pathogenetic pathways of the
major types of skin cancer
- to be able to describe the major diagnostic features of basal cell carcinoma, actinic
keratosis, squamous cell carcinoma, nevi, atypical nevi, and malignant melanoma
- to classify and describe the treatment options for skin cancer
- to understand current approaches to skin cancer prevention
Skin Cancer
- most common cancer, affecting at least 1 in 7 B.C. residents
- basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are most common
- malignant melanoma is less common but potentially more dangerous, affecting 1 in 90 (an
increase from 1:1500 in 1935)
