Squamous Cell Carcinoma
- usually begins as a pink, scaling patch on areas of maximal sun
exposure
- patch limited to epidermis is called actinic keratosis
- actinic keratoses and squamous carcinoma in-situ (Bowens
Disease) are pre-cancers
- treatment options for actinic keratoses include:
- liquid nitrogen cryotherapy
- topical 5-Fluorouracil
- actinic keratosis
- left untreated can evolve into invasive squamous cell carcinoma
- squamous cell carcinoma
- manifested clinically as a hard pink or white nodule
- often surrounded by the typical scaling of an actinic keratosis
- is particularly significant in that systemic spread, particularly to lymph nodes, can
occur in some cases
- treatment of squamous carcinoma limited to the skin is
- surgical excision
- radiation therapy
